1. It's 12 to 15 years old
Most central air systems last 12 to 15 years in our climate. Past that, efficiency drops, parts get harder to source, and the odds of a major failure climb every summer. If your unit is in that range and acting up, repair money is often better put toward replacement.
2. Your energy bills keep climbing
An aging compressor and degraded refrigerant performance mean the system runs longer to deliver less cooling. If your summer bills are creeping up while your habits haven't changed, the AC is quietly costing you every month. A modern high-efficiency unit can meaningfully cut that load.
3. It needs frequent or expensive repairs
